Literacy History - Blog Assignment # 1-

 Hey Everyone!

My name is Juvan Davis and I am a transferred college student from an island in the Caribbean call Tortola which is my home country. I was actually born in Puerto Rico, San Juan. I am currently enrolled at NJCU obviously, in order to obtain my Bachelors Degree in Accounting. I have recently been classified as a senior this semester which means I am soon on the end of my journey in getting my Bachelors Degree. I actually obtained my Associates in Accounting in 2021 from a community college in my home country called Hamilton Lavity Stoutt Community College. My goal after I have obtained my Bachelors Degree from NJCU, is to pursue my Masters Degree in Accounting so that I gain more knowledge in that field and become an asset to a company or firm. My home country is a small country in the Caribbean known as Tortola, where we have lovely beaches and blue crystal waters. I am currently located in New Jersey, Bayonne, one year ago I resided in New Jersey, Jersey City which is a little closer to school.

I am not currently employed at the moment but I am looking for a job surrounding my field in Accounting. I prefer a remote occupation so that I can protect myself from COVID-19 but at the same time if I do obtain a non-remote job I will take it and make the best of it. Before I came to the US I was a sales rep receptionist at an Automotive Shop. I was responsible for making sure emails was sent out to our clients, logging the company daily sales using excel and well and adding calculating the sales done for the day.

My hobbies contains playing video game, free lance driving, listening to music and getting well familiar with new technology and devices. I am tech geek/wizard when it comes to advance technology. I am very interested in the tech field I even feel as though I should take on a course in information technology at NJCU.

My earliest experience of becoming literate would be noticing and selecting my most dominant hand. My parents would help me with this by giving me items and see which hand I would use the most to get them or give me a pen or pencil and looked at which hand I would use more often and continue giving items in that particular hand. I began to feel most literate at the ages of 6-8 because I was now writing more, reading books, talking and communicating and walking with proper movements. This process of becoming literate was frustrating at times when I was not able to do certain things on my own such as when reading and stumbling on my words I would become angry/aggressive and throw the book due to this rage. At those times my role model was my mom reason being she was a single mom and just seeing how she would nurture protect and guide me made me look up to her a lot. Now looking at literacy I can see why it is important for it helps me in my everyday life. For example, reading news heads, talking to peers, being able to move around on my own, writing letters at my place of occupation, comprehending when reading or being talked to and etc.

So basically that's all there is to know about me and I wish to get to know you guys better as well! I hope that this will be and awesome semester with my classmates and professor.

  1. Juvan,
Thanks for sharing some of your literacy story and for your wonderful introduction. Your home country of Tortola sounds beautiful! Congratulations on being a Senior this year and being close to finishing your undergraduate degree in accounting! Your goal to complete your Master's degree in accounting is inspiring, as well. Your love of technology and new ways of using technology for work and everyday is also great! Thanks for sharing about your early journey in learning to read as a young student, and your frustration at times. It's good to remember how being a young student can be very challenging, and how important the support and patience of parents and teachers can be!
I love the picture you shared of what looks like a special occasion.
I look forward to working together this term.
    Professor Knauer
