Assignment 3 (Reflection IV) - Juvan A. Davis

Part IV: 1980-2000 The Bottom Line

 The Bottom Line Archive

From reading part four of the book, I have observed quite a few advancements and developments.  First I would like to start off with this era of the book being the most excelling and supportive period in the book.  This time period mainly focused on how to build and establish a school structure that can mend, groom and form the children/students in such a manner that they ready and well prepared for the business guided economy.  From what I picked up the main reason as to why in this time span the schools were focused on heavily was because the schools had low standards and condition required for a degree to be obtained and for the business world ahead of them.  Economically speaking, the government looked at it as being a risk for the nation and I totally one hundred percent agree.  The reason I agree because it is the school's job to educate students to highest degree in order for them to attend college or be able to   engage in the workforce, hence making them the reason for education failures.  The solution to the dilemma discussed was preparing systematized and regulated testing so that they as educators can see where a student is at and how much they learnt and understand with the material that was given to them.

For all of this to have happen there were key persons involved with in the community and they were presidents Bush, Clinton and Reagan.  There were others as well such as the multiple reformists, who took the initiative of what they trust and believe was right for the community and guided and conducted the establishment of the many reforms, thoughts and ideas to which is still occurring the school system in this present time.  A prime example of a reform that was mentioned and is still being abide till this day is, President Reagan being able to assist in increasing the values, criteria, and quality of the current U.S. educational system through competition and motivation with the creation of the “Choice Experiment”.  This worked by students and families choosing the school they wanted to attend that most interested them, and that they saw as the best fit for themselves.  Another example is, President Bush called for vouchers, which allowed low-income students to receive the same opportunities as the wealthy to attend private schools at the tax-payer’s expense.
